Update 10/9/2024

ABSENCES DUE TO ILLNESS (Page 19)

All absences must be reported to the UBCA office by a student’s parents/guardians as soon as possible. Teachers will provide a list of required make-up work and due dates. Some absences due to communicable illness may require a doctor’s release before a student will be permitted back to school. Parents should coordinate with teachers to get a list of make-up work and due dates for missed academic material. Students may be sent home for the following reasons:

REASONS STUDENTS MIGHT BE SENTHOME AND WHEN TO STAY HOME

While education is important, stopping the spread of illness is our top priority. For the welfare of your child and others in the school, all children who are sick must be kept at home. Students will be sent home from school for the following reasons:

  • Fever of 100.4 or more

  • New or worsening rash with a fever

  • Skin sores that are draining fluid on an uncovered part of the body and are unable to be covered with a bandage.

  • Vomiting at school or more than twice in the preceding 24 hours.

  • Diarrhea at school that causes ‘accidents,’ is bloody, or results in greater than two bowel movements above what the child normally experiences in a 24-hour period.

  • Respiratory virus symptoms that are worsening or not improving and not better explained by another cause such as seasonal allergies

  • Other illnesses with symptoms that are worsening or not improving such strep throat, conjunctivitis, etc.

  • Head lice or other bug infestations (scabies, bed bugs, etc.)

UBCA is subject to send children home if it is determined they are too sick, lethargic, or otherwise to participate in a classroom setting.

Any student who becomes ill at school will spend time in the nurse’s room until a parent or guardian arrives.
WHEN TO RETURN

If a child is still sick or returns too soon, parents/ guardians will be contacted and must come to pick them up. Children will not be allowed to return unless they have fully recovered according to the following guidelines:

  • The child has not had a fever for at least 24 hours and is not using fever-reducing medicine.

  • New rash has been evaluated by a healthcare professional and has no fever or fever has resolved

  • Rash with uncovered Skin Sores are crusting and child has received treatment by a healthcare professional

  • Vomiting has resolved overnight and the child is able to hold all foods & liquids in the morning

  • Diarrhea has improved and the child is no longer having accidents OR no longer having bowel movements more than 2 above normal per 24 hour period.

  •  Bloody bowel movements have been evaluated by a healthcare professional

  • For Respiratory illness or viruses, symptoms are improving overall for at least 24 hours and families consider additional actions to reduce the spread.

  • For other illnesses requiring antibiotics or antiviral treatments, the child is on antibiotics/antivirals for at least 24-48 hours prior to returning to school. THIS INCLUDES STREP

    •  Please be aware that if one child has strep throat, other siblings may as well. Please get them tested as appropriate. Please notify the front office if your child has strep so appropriate measures for extra cleaning of high-contact areas within the school may be initiated. Be sure to sanitize student water bottles, lunch boxes, pencils, and other high-contact items if they have strep.

  • For other illnesses not requiring antibiotics, symptoms/illness is improving and meets all other requirements for "When To Return”

  • Live Head Lice must be completely removed and the child is undergoing continued treatments to kill any remaining nits.

  • For other bug infestations, the child's home must be treated according to CDC guidelines, the child must be seen by a healthcare professional, and has undergone the minimum treatment period as recommended.
